The trainings listed here are sponsored and taught by members of the Michigan Prescribed Fire Council and are NWCG (National Wildfire Coordinating Group) approved.

S-190 and S-130 General Course Information:

The National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) is offering S-190 and S-130 as online training.

To participate in the online training you are required to have a Course Administrator. A Course Administrator is responsible for providing assistance to the student during the completion of the course. The Fire Council is able to provide a NWCG Course Administrator with Registration.

Will this training qualify me to fight fire?
No, you cannot fight fire until you have been considered qualified or 'red carded' as a FFT2 by a NWCG member agency or fire department. For more information on how to become a firefighter, visit this page.

Student Prerequisites
S-190 Prerequisite: None
S-130 Prerequisite: S-190

If you have previously taken S-190, you must provide a Certificate of Completion to the Course Coordinator with the Registration Form.

Requirements for Completion
S-190: Student must complete Modules 1-3 online
S-130: Student must complete Modules 1-12 online. Student must complete Field Day Exercise (Module 13) provided by Course Administrator

How much does it cost?
No cost for online course. Registration with the Fire Council to provide a Course Administrator and Field Day Exercises is $50.00. CD's are available through NWCG for $.95 or on the Fire Council's Registration Form.

How can I access it?
Access to the Online Training: http://training.nwcg.gov/courses.html Warning: The results of your course are not saved by this site. If your course has a test component, be sure to have a functioning printer and/or save your results to your computer. If you fail to print or save your results, there is no way to retrieve your results and you will have to retake the test.
CD available through NWCG or Fire Council for a small fee.

How do I participate in the Field Day?
The Fire Council will hold a Field Day for all registered students that have completed S-130 Modules 1-12 on Saturday, March 20, 2010. Note: Minimum: 20 Maximum: 40

How do I get a final certificate of completion?
The online and CD versions of the courses will produce module certificates upon passing the Challenge Review for each module. Students must have a computer generated certificate(s) to turn into the Course Coordinator.
S-130: Final certification for the entire course will come from your field day lead instructor after successful completion of the field day.
S-190: Course administrators issue final certificate.
*(If you are taking S-130 and S-190 together, the field day lead instructor can issue both certificates upon proof of completion of required modules).

Important Note: NWCG or NFA (National Fire Academy) does not issue certificates, provide course administrators, provide field day training, or issue red cards. These must be obtained by your employing department or agency. Certification is only available from your employing department or agency. The Michigan Prescribed Fire Council is providing this opportunity for those not employed by a NWCG member agency to receive this training.

How do I register?

  1. If you are able to complete the on-line courses by March 1, 2010, complete a Registration Form.
  2. You will receive a Confirmation/Receipt that will include a Course Administrator name/contact information and the location of the Field Day. You must complete the Field Day in order to receive a certificate for S-130.
  3. Upon completion of the on-line course(s), send all Module Certificates to the Course Coordinator by March 5, 2010 to the address on the Confirmation/Receipt.
